One was delivered to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and the other was delivered to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington. Modular, reconfigurable, and completely transportable submarine maintenance support structures can be stacked to 3 and 5 stories tall. They are equipped with remotely controlled actuation systems for tilting, raising, lowering and extending multiple platforms and skyways to satisfy the Navy’s requirements for submarine maintenance.

Land O' Lakes Phase V Dryer Tower

Location: Tulare, CA

This job consisted of stainless steel plate flooring, a continuous stair over 100 feet tall with stainless steel railing, numerous precise floor openings to receive large equipment, and complex exoskeleton structural steel design and placement.

Berry Petroleum Pipe Rack

Location:  Fellows, CA
Contractor: Berry Petroleum Company

This project included fabrication of 26 pipe racks for Berry Petroleum's new water plant at the North Midway Sunset Oilfield near Fellows, CA.

4000 Gallon ISO Containerized Fuel System

Contractor:  Bryant Fuel And Power Systems

KSF fabricated 28 mobile Self-Contained Fuel Systems for the military, complete with assembly, systems installation and operational testing of the fuel delivery systems. We also performed the blasting and coating on these units. The Fuel Systems are stackable, capable of being daisy-chained, and can fuel two vehicles at the same time at a very high fuel delivery rate.

Bakersfield College Solar Project

Location:  Bakersfield, CA

This heavy tube-steel carport structure has spans of 40 and 60 feet. It supports a 1-Megawatt Solar Array that tracks the sun throughout the day. The array is supported by 1,000 posts that had to be precisely aligned and attached in our fabrication facility.

Doffing Roll Unloader & Fuel Crib

Location:  McKittrick, CA
Contractor: Global Green Solutions Inc.

Project included fabrication and assembly of a specialized Doffing Roll Unloader and Fuel Crib used to offload and store biomass product at a prototype biomass energy plant. Additional items fabricated for this project included various platforms, support structures and a complex combuster windbox assembly.

Orange Coast College Community Planetarium

  • Owner: Coast Community College District
  • Location: Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, Ca
  • Description: New 12,124 sq. ft. Planetarium Building on the Orange Coast College Campus (Includes 100 seat Planetarium Theater, an Exhibit Ares, and a 60 ft. tall Foucault Pendulum Tower.

 

Kern Steel fabricated and installed Structural steel framing (columns, beams, braces, girts etc.), extensive concrete embeds and AESS Steel Framing.

The project manager on this job stated that some of the challenges faced were in the detailing, layout and erection of the structural steel due to the extensive use of embeds located in curved concrete walls and in the planetarium dome itself.

The placement of these embeds and their connection plates was critical to making the steel structure assembly properly. KSF employed a survey crew to assist with the placement of the concrete embeds as well as locating the field welded connection clips at precisely the right elevations and angles.

The Foucault Pendulum tower is fabricated from tube steel ellipses, sloping columns, and 'V' braces. Due to the complexity of the tower, it was completely assembled in Kern Steel's fabrication shop to ensure everything fit correctly before disassembling it and shipping it out.

 

 

Exposed skylight braces were fabricated using "Castconnex" universal pin connectors on the ends to provide a unique architectural look at the 10 curved skylights just outside the main theater area.

Finally, AESS components were a critical part of this project since there are numerous steel columns, skylight braces, canopies, and exhibit hangars that are exposed in the final construction.

The planetarium is set to open in the fall of 2018.

 

North High School Gym

  • Description: Construction of brand new basketball gymnasium at North High School.

Project included fabrication and installation of the following items:

• 245 total tons of structural steel
• Handrails
• 3-section trusses spanning over 150 feet long

Kern Steel Fabrication provided all the structural steel for the new gymnasium at North High School. The gym was named after late coach and athletic director Lloyd Williams and is the largest in the Kern High School District.

Vandenberg Building 7000 Renovation

• Mechanical equipment supports

This project contained some logistical challenges because it is on an active Air Force Base. Security is a concern and all personnel and deliveries must be checked and cleared before entering the base. There are certain times when crane operations were prohibited due to rocket launches from nearby launch pads.

Because the project is renovating an existing building all site conditions had to be verified and measured before any detailing, fabrication, or installation of structural steel and misc. metals could take place. Coordination with the general contractor and with other trades is critical because only certain areas of the building are available to be worked on due to demolition, lead abatement, or ongoing work by others.

While fabricating and erecting the steel numerous additions and revisions were required due to existing conditions that were not shown in the bid documents or anticipated. A couple of examples include:
• 2nd and 3rd floor concrete deck that was actually 7” thick as opposed to 5” thick as shown in the plans resulting in revisions to the supports and attachments of new stair flights.
• Mechanical penthouse steel that was rusted through requiring replacement of 90% of the steel framing as well as requiring additional new roof support beams below.
• Existing building columns that were as much as 2” out of plumb requiring new perimeter roof beams needing to be offset and field welded in lieu of bolted to allow for proper alignment.

UC Davis Large Lecture Hall

This project contains some logistical challenges because it is on a very tight site in the middle of an active University Campus. Deliveries had to be coordinated precisely because there are only specific times trucks can be received and the jobsite was not large enough to allow for all the steel to be delivered and shook out.

This project also included design and engineering of a mock-up structure that needed to incorporate many of the structural conditions found in the lecture hall building scaled down into a very small footprint. The mock-up structure was used by the design team to test the buildings finishes ensuring that moisture and wind would not affect the building.

AESS components were also a crucial part of the structure since there are numerous steel columns, cabana beams, and eyebrow features that are exposed in the final construction.

Kern Steel fabricated and erected columns, beams, braces and AESS rolled tubing for West Valley College, the building is a student service center consisting of classrooms, conference rooms, offices, as well as several unisex bathrooms. This project took 6 months to complete. Some of the requirements included CVN testing, MTR’s and Welding procedures.

Since 1959 Kern Steel has been fabricating steel stairways and handrailings. Miscellaneous steel is how Kern Steel got its start in the steel business. We have been fabricating steel ever since and have extended our business to structural steel as well as ground support equipment.

32 Acre Park-Brighthouse Amphitheatre

A large portion of this job was the construction of the 3,000 sq ft Amphitheatre with exposed aluminum wire mesh panels integrated between the tube steel trusses and brace frames.  The site work included multiple styles of metalized guardrails at the bridges, amphitheatre, overlooks and stairways.
